4 Ingredients To Avoid In Beauty Products | Shens Therapeutics
Ladies, it is probably a good time to take a look at what is really in the cosmetic or beauty products that you have been using. From cosmetics, shampoos, lotions, cleansers, and other products you have been using daily can be just about as beneficial or harmful as anything you put inside your body.
Yes, the same way you look at food labels, you should do the same for the beauty and personal care products you apply to your skin.
If you thought that ‘popular brands’ and conventional products are all highly regulated by the FDA, you would be very appalled. With international shipping and trades widely available, some companies have cart blanche to use any ingredient or raw material without government review or approval. Thus, the products reached you from unknown manufacturers or sources.
According to Havard Medical School, ingredients found in multiple beauty products have been linked to everything from allergic reactions to hormonal disruptions to cancer. Many of these synthetic chemicals are skin irritants, skin penetrators, endocrine disrupters and are carcinogenic.
With the beauty industry highly unregulated and no pre-product approval before a product hits the market and enters your home, it is vital for individuals to check the ingredients labelling on the products to see what they are using. At Shens Therapeutics, we understand that it is rather tricky to navigate through, so we try to make it as simple as possible for you!
Without further ado, here are the 4 Ingredients To Avoid In Beauty Products!
Artificial Fragrance/Parfum
Almost every single conventional skincare and cosmetic product (even “unscented” ones) contains artificial fragrances. Manufacturers aren’t required to reveal what’s actually in their fragrances, so you’ll simply see “Fragrance” or “Parfum” on the ingredients list when it could actually be a cocktail of carcinogens, allergens, endocrine disruptors, and irritants.
Hence, for individuals who have sensitive skin, an unknown recipe of fragrances may just trigger a rash or dreadful skin allergy that lasted for days.
Petroleum Distillates
Petroleum distillates are common found in beauty products such as mascara and some cleanser. This particular ingredient may cause contact dermatitis and are often contaminated with cancer-causing impurities. The petroleum distillates are produced in oil refineries simultaneously as automobile fuel, heating oil, and chemical feed.
In the short term, individuals using these products, which contains petroleum distillates, may cause skin irritation, inflammation and skin hydration. Hence, this may cause the surrounding skin to crack in the long term because the solvents defat pathways around the skin cells.
DMDM Hydantoin & UREA (Imidazolidinyl)
Next on the list would be DMDM Hydantoin & UREA (Imidazolidinyl), which can usually be found in skincare products, cosmetics, shampoos and conditioners.
Summarily, DMDM Hydantoin & UREA (Imidazolidinyl) are preservatives that often release formaldehyde which may cause joint pain, skin allergies, headaches, and loss of sleep. Hence, if you are wondering what formaldehyde is, you’re certainly in for a great discovery (not in a good way).
Formaldehyde is a colourless, strong-smelling gas used in a wide range of industries and products, including building materials, walls, cabinets, furniture and personal care products. According to the United States National Toxicology Program and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, individuals who are consistently exposed to formaldehyde have a high chance of tumour formation in their body which may result in leukaemia. Moreover, formaldehyde can be absorbed through the skin.
Remember what we mentioned earlier in this post, treat the products you applied to your skin with the same caution as the food you put in your body.
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG)
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) is used in many types of cosmetics as a form of thickener. Hence, it is commonly found in lotions or moisturisers. More often than not, PEG is contaminated with both ethylene oxide (a known carcinogen) and 1,4-Dioxane, which is known to cause respiratory problems.
Hence, with the information above, we hope that every individual would start to be more cautious about the products that they may have been using daily. It is essential to educate yourself and do your research before you buy any products in general. At Shens Therapeutics, we understand that it is almost impossible to avoid every single synthetic chemical, but you can do your part in limiting the amount of toxins your body is exposed to.
With that, you can also consider checking out some of our skincare products that don’t contain the above elements that would be harmful to your skin and body!
