5 Common Causes Of Hair Loss | Shens Therapeutics
If you are troubled by the amount of hair falling out and noticing signs of thinning hair, you don’t need to suffer in silence. At Shens Therapeutics, we’re here to help you understand more about your hair loss.
Let us take a deep dive into learning what exactly is hair loss. By understanding the common causes of hair loss, you can take action to improve your condition.
According to clinical studies, it is normal to shed 50 – 100 strands of hair a day. Hair shedding is part of a natural balance — some hairs fall out while others grow in. However, if you are to realise that you are losing an unusual amount of hair in a short time, it can be a cause of concern.
Difference Between Excessive Hair Shedding & Hair Loss
Typically, new hair growth can easily replace the lost hair, but this does not happen all the time. When the body sheds significantly more hairs every day, a person has excessive hair shedding. The medical term for this condition is called telogen effluvium.
However, it is important to note that excessive hair shedding is different from hair loss. Commonly, excessive shedding tends to stop after some time or when the stressors of excessive shedding have ceased. With that, our body tends to readjust itself, and the hair will regain its fullness after some time.
These stressors of excessive shedding could be:
- Lost 20 pounds or more
- Given birth
- Experiencing a lot of stress
- Had high fever
- Undergone an operation
- Recovering from an illness, especially if it included high fever
- Stopped taking birth-control pills
Most people notice excessive hair shedding a few months after the stressful event. For example, most ladies may experience excessive hair shedding about two months after giving birth. However, this particular shedding phenomenon is normal and temporary (don’t worry, mommies! You will regain the hair you have lost).
Hair Loss
In contrast, hair loss generally occurs when a condition stops the hair from growing. The medical term for this condition is anagen effluvium. Some of these causes may indirectly damage the scalp and follicles on your head. Thus, causing the hair to stop growing out from them.
With that, here are the five most common causes of hair loss:
Hereditary Hair Loss
Without a doubt, the number one ranking cause of hair loss would be due to hereditary effects. In short, hereditary-pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in the world. Hereditary-pattern baldness is not really a disease but a natural condition caused by a particular combination of genetics, hormone levels and the ageing process.
Almost all men and women will notice hair loss or hair thinning as they age. However, up to 40% of men and women will experience a more obvious form of this condition.
Hair loss typically begins in the 20s and 30s. Although for women, these changes are most noticeable after menopause. And, yes, hair loss can start during early adulthood. Despite not being able to stop hereditary hair loss to take effect eventually, we can still do our best to slow down the effects by retaining a healthy scalp, follicles and hair. Thus, encouraging hair growth and strengthening our hair from any breakage.
What can you do?
From getting regular trims and treating your hair to some hard-earned TLC, there are many ways in which you can do to slow down the effects of hair fall.
At Shens Therapeutics, we have two incredible hair treatments that aim to get right down to the problem and provide some extra help to encourage hair growth (what we meant is downright to your scalp and follicles).
#1 Medical Indiba® Hair Regeneration System
At Shens Therapeutics, our Medical Indiba® Hair Regeneration System utilising a patented Proionic System of radiofrequency, enjoy a warm massage to your scalp while receiving electro-thermal energy. The proionic technology is able to bring the best of ions movement to restore cell activity to the hair follicles and scalps.
With the additional use of our premium PDRN hair serum, the Medical Indiba® Hair Regeneration System treatment is able to extend its regenerative capabilities of biostimulation, microcirculation and hyperactivation of the cellular activities within the hair follicles.
This treatment can help to improve your head’s blood circulation and oxygenation, encouraging a better supply of vitamins and nutrients to promote hair growth.
Recommended Treatment: Intensive treatment (4 sessions weekly), and followed by the maintenance (once a month).
#2 PDRN Hair Booster
A large percentage of men and women would experience some forms of hair loss or hair thinning in their lifetime. In general, the common causes of hair loss are due to heredity, hormonal changes, medical conditions and stress. However, you can reduce the chances of the complication from worsening by taking adequate action now.
Further, to incubate and facilitate healthy hair growth, the scalp would need to be in an ideal condition to provide the quintessential needs for healthier and stronger hair.
At Shens Therapeutics, the PDRN Hair Booster utilises premium PDRN extracted from Salmon DNA to repair the hair follicles at the cellular level. The PDRN is delivered into the scalp using microchanneling, a micro-needling device which creates channels to allow essential nutrients to penetrate the scalp effectively. The premium PDRN extracts are harvested from the leading laboratories in Korea, and the beneficial serum has been known to reverse the DNA damage and improve overall scalp condition.
Combined with the microchannelling, the PDRN Hair Booster has an excellent effect on activating hair cells, accelerating repairs and scalp tissue regeneration. Hence, this treatment is excellent for individuals who are experiencing an overall thinning of hair and weakened hair (breakage and hair fall) due to unfavourable scalp condition.
Recommended Treatment: Intensive treatment (4 sessions weekly), followed by the maintenance (once per month).
Medications
Aside from hereditary factor, some individuals who have undergone or currently required consistent medication application may experience hair loss. There are many medications in the market that can cause hair loss in particular groups of individuals without causing any problems to others.
Anticoagulant medications such as heparin and warfarin have rare side effects of causing hair loss. Additionally, antihypertensive medications such as beta-blocker drugs (e.g. atenolol, metoprolol) and ACE inhibitors (e.g. perindopril, lisinopril) may also occasionally lead to hair loss in some individuals.
Moreover, medications that alter hormones in the body may also result in hair loss in some patients. As mentioned earlier, birth control pills can further affect your hormonal level in the body. It can cause the hair to move from the growing phase to the resting phase too soon and for too long. This form of hair loss is called telogen effluvium. Large amounts of hair can fall out during this process.
Hairstyle Pulls On Your Scalp
Have you ever wondered if your hairstyle could be the cause of hair loss? According to clinical research, the hairstyle with the compulsion to pull one’s hair may damage the scalp and follicles in the long run.
It may often seem harmless to braid or tie your hair in a tight ponytail. However, these styles of hair can cause hair loss when your hair is arranged in ways that cause a pull on your hair roots. With that, the continual pulling can lead to permanent hair loss.
What can you do?
The first thing you would need to do is correct the habit and change a hairstyle that does not have the compulsion to pull one’s hair. Hence, the change could be a simple trim that reduces the length of your hair. Thus, eliminating the need to tie or bun up your hair.
Hormonal Imbalance (Menopause)
“Are you in your 40s or 50s? You might need to take note of this.”
For women who are experiencing menopause, your body would be going through numerous physical changes as it adjusts to fluctuating hormone levels. Hence, many women have unpleasant symptoms during menopause, and one of them is hair loss or thinning hair on their scalp.
Hair loss tends to be subtler in women than it is in men. Most women experience overall hair thinning rather than noticeable bald spots. The thinning can occur on the front, sides, or top of the head. Hair may also fall out in large clumps during brushing and showering.
Hair loss during menopause is due to estrogen and progesterone lowered production in the body, which further cause an imbalance in the hormones. When the levels of estrogen and progesterone drop, hair grows more slowly and becomes much thinner.
What can you do?
It is important for women who are experiencing menopause or hormonal imbalance to keep their stress levels in check. As stated above, stress can also cause temporary hair loss. Hence, if it is combined with hormonal imbalance, it may worsen the hair loss condition.
Besides the above, individuals need to maintain a healthy diet, a healthy lifestyle and seek help from a medical professional or a dermatologist to improve their current hair loss condition.
Harsh Haircare Products
With hair care products widely available, they are often disregarded as “harmless” to our body (or our hair and scalp) as we tend to use them daily. However, these hair care and personal care products that smell good and create luxuriant lather may also contain synthetic chemicals that can lead to your hair loss.
Here are some of the synthetic chemical ingredients which you should try to avoid when purchasing a haircare product:
- Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS)
- Sodium chloride
- Polyethylene glycol (PEG)
- Quaternium-15, formaldehyde, parabens like methylparaben and propylparaben
- Diethanolamine (DEA) & triethanolamine (TEA)
- Propylene glycol
Moreover, if you happen to colour, bleach or perm your hair frequently, you could be damaging your scalp and follicles as well. In short, once a hair follicle is damaged, hair would not be able to grow out from that follicle. Having many damaged hair follicles would create a permanent bald spot.
Therefore, it is imperative for individuals to care more about their scalp and hair health before it is irreversible.
What can you do?
Besides avoiding the above harmful ingredients, individuals would also need to assess whether the hair care products they are using address their hair’s needs and are suitable for their hair type.
In short, the hair products should address two critical needs for your hair: moisture and protein. Protein is essential when it comes to hair, nails, and skin. It is used to build tissue cells that help keep your hair healthy and growing. Whereas for moisture, shampoos tend to strip off the natural moisture from our hair follicles, making our hair dry and brittle. Therefore, you can introduce hair care products such as hair masks, deep conditioners, or moisturising shampoos that help with the lack of protein and moisture.
At Shens Therapeutics, we believe that every individual is beautiful and different in their own ways. Thus, requiring different needs for their body, and the same applies to the hair. How much moisture and protein your hair needs depends on your hair type and porosity level.
There are a total of three levels on the porosity spectrum: low, normal and high. Understanding your hair’s porosity level will better help you choose the right products for your hair type.
With the help of the above information, we hope that you would now have a better understanding of the topic of hair loss and how to better care for your hair! Hence, if you are interested to know more about the hair treatments recommended above, please feel free to contact our customer support team via our hotline or WhatsApp.
