Why The Sudden Weight Gain After 30s | Shens Therapeutics
Before hitting the big 30, many individuals may not have the problem of losing or maintaining their weight before. Without much concern about what they consume or lead a lifestyle without much exercise, they still managed to stay in ‘shape’ despite the above.
However, turning 30 might be the beginning of the weight-loss woes for many individuals. As we get older, our bodies don’t respond the same way to weight loss efforts. Many of us can’t quite figure out what happened – especially when we eat the same amount as in our 20s.
While many would point their fingers and blame it on the slowing of metabolism, the truth is that is not really the case. As much as we would like to think that the slowing of metabolism contributes to the large extent of the “sudden” weight gain in our 30s, our eating habits and lifestyle decisions often set it to stone. According to Dr Primark, an obesity medicine physician at the Scottsdale Weight Loss Center in Arizona, he has previously mentioned that “we sometimes say genetics loads the gun and lifestyle pulls the trigger”.
Shens Therapeutics is here to unravel why you may have gained weight, thus giving you clues on the tweaks to our lifestyle that we might need to turn things around. We will also be sharing exciting treatments that would help you reverse those unwanted gains and “love handles”.
Let us begin!
Age-Related Muscle Loss
Do you know that you’re losing muscle mass as you age? According to medical studies, the amount of lean muscle we have would naturally begin to decline by 3 to 8 percent per decade after age 30. Hence, this age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia.
With that, you might be asking why the loss of muscle matter and how it contributes to weight gain. Lean muscle tends to use and burn more calories than fat. Unless you’re regularly proceeding with your strength training to build your muscles, your body with lesser muscle mass will burn fewer calories.
As we all know, unused calories or energy will turn into stored fat in the body. That makes weight and fat gain likely if you were to continue consuming the same amount of calories as you were younger.
How to get around it:
Time to be more active and proceed with strength training. Individuals can try to add or incorporate some weights or weight training equipment into their workout routine.
Metabolism Is Slower Than Before
In the above segment, we did mention that the slowing of metabolism does not play a hefty part in weight gain compared to the effects of lifestyle choices and eating habits. However, the slowing of metabolism still contributes to weight gain to a certain extent.
In short, metabolism is a complex process in which the body converts calories into energy passively. The converted energy is then used to allow your body to function properly. Yes, that also means when you are resting, your body still needs energy for all its “hidden” functions, such as breathing, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. Thus, the constant burning of calories and energy conversion.
However, there are a few factors that determine your individual basal metabolism, which are:
- Your body size and composition. People who are larger or have more muscle burn more calories, even at rest.
- Your gender. Men usually have less body fat and more muscle than do women of the same age and weight, which means men burn more calories.
- Your age. As you get older, the amount of muscle tends to decrease and fat accounts for more of your weight, slowing down calorie burning.
With that, there are two factors that determine how many calories which your body would burn each day, which are Food Processing (Thermogenesis) and Physical Activity. It is noted that thermogenesis burns about 10 percent of the calories during digestion, absorbing, transportation and storing of energy. On the other hand, physical activities remain a variable in which it depends on your heart rate and level of physical activeness.
How to get around it:
Despite the importance of metabolism and how it provides for our body, it would be almost impossible to make your body utilise more energy for its basic functions without being physically active.
Hence, the only way to get around is to take in fewer calories and increase the level of physical activities to reach your weight loss goal faster. There’s no other magic bullet.
Consuming More Than We Can Burn Off
As much as we would like to think that we are consuming the same amount of calories as when we were younger, the reality is often not when it comes to the changes in diet and lifestyle.
With the introduction of alcohol into our diet, we often have too many drinks, which causes us to exceed our daily calories intake (2200 kcal). Did you know, on average, half a glass of wine is around 140 kcal? Hence, two cans of beer or two glasses of wine on top of our three meals would easily exceed the limit by 10%. If we are also snacking as we drink at the bar, our once flat abs can quickly become an apple belly with abdominal fat disguised as adorable love handles if these were to go on for a while.
As we all know, losing weight isn’t instant, and the same applies to gaining weight. One cheat meal would never result in weight gain for an extended period, but an unpleasant long-term eating habit might just pull the trigger.
Hence, Singapore, a city well known for its food, doesn’t actually make it easier when most social gatherings or celebrations involve food.
How to get around it:
Individuals facing the problem of weight gain can start planning their meals and counting the number of calories they consume. Thus, keeping themselves off the sugary treats and drinks, as well as focusing on the healthier options.
Other than the above, individuals could also increase their protein intake to reduce appetite and hunger levels. In one study, increasing protein intake from 15% to 30% of calories made overweight women eat 441 fewer calories each day without intentionally restricting anything.
More Sedentary and More Stressed
When you’re in your 30s, your career is likely in full swing, which can pose a few weight loss challenges. For one, you’re likely moving less. You may commute an hour or so to and from work, sit at a desk for eight or more hours a day, and have so much on your plate that there’s no time to go for a walk or exercise during the workday.
You may also find yourself too busy to break for lunch, increasing the odds that you’ll scarf down something from the vending machine or order calorie-dense takeout food. Yes, stress eating into our 30s.
It is often a double whammy, in which we eat high-fat, high sugar food but continue to be less active and not burning the calories fast enough.
How to get around it:
In many cases, stress eating can only worsen our stress (you would be more stressed when you gain weight). Hence, we would need to find a healthier option that can help us cope with it.
To relieve stress and burn calories to lose the weight you have gained, you can ramp up your physical intensity while enjoying such activities.
Here are some activities you can participate in:
- A brisk walk around the park
- Hot yoga or aerial yoga
- Heading out for a gym session
- Join your friends for team sports (badminton, basketball, frisbee etc.)
- Weekly runs led by professional trainers and pacers
- High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
Other than the above, are you also looking to tune down your pace, destress and eliminate your fats at the same time? Shens Therapeutics is here to introduce an exciting treatment to help you achieve your desired contoured figure with no downtime!
Shens Therapeutics | Medical Indiba® BodySlim System
Start your journey towards a healthier and contoured body featuring Indiba’s patented Proionic® System of radiofrequency, backed by proven clinical studies and medical-grade technology.
Medical Indiba® is clinically proven to visibly reduce visceral fat and circumferential width using three synergistic treatment modalities: radiofrequency energy, thermal and mechanical stimuli. Stubborn fat deposits are reduced, and fat build-up is prevented at the cellular level. With this treatment, Medical Indiba® uses higher energy levels and delivers a more effective treatment than other beauty based Indiba or traditional radio frequency machines.
The Medical Indiba® BodySlim System treatment will feel like a warm massage which is pleasant and soothing. The synergistic actions of the radio frequency energy, thermal and mechanical modalities combine to heat adipocytes (known as fat cells) to the optimal temperature to cause apoptosis (death of fat cells), which is then removed via the body’s lymphatic system.
The treatment also induces biological effects at the cellular level, which interferes with the production of fat cells and fat deposits.
Recommended treatment: Intensive Treatment (6 – 10 sessions, once a week) and followed by the maintenance session (1 session per month).
Closing
There are many reasons why we may have gone from being slim to experiencing a sudden weight gain in our 30s. In short, to get back into shape, we would need to have to burn more calories than we consume or find alternative treatments that can help to tackle this issue more efficiently!
